Spread Our Wings

Spread Our Wings is a community project set up to help local disabled and disadvantaged people to get out and about and into the workplace. It was the enthusiasm/determination of Harvey Sayce, age 23 years, who started up Feathered Friends 5 years ago, buying in bird seed, bagging it up and selling it at local farmers markets.

He thought that other people in his position might like to do the same and he was given the opportunity to do so by EnviroAbility in Ross-on-Wye. The project is open to other organisations that support disabled people, particularly those just leaving school. The aim of the project is to give all involved a sense of purpose and to enable them to meet and work with more people so that they become contributing members of the team rather than someone who needs to be there.

Following the ethos of EnviroAbIlity, all of the seed is now ethically sourced and part of the project involves growing some of our own seed organically at Model Farm near Ross-on-Wye. Why feed our local birds with peanuts shipped from Argentina when they would never find a peanut in the wild here? We provide a mix of seeds that they would find growing in their natural habitat.

It is planned to extend the project to provide Country Classroom educational facilities in EnviroAbility’s wooden cabin near Ross-on-Wye, where children can come and learn about birds and how and what to feed them in order to help them and encourage them to our gardens where they are such valuable members of the ecosystem.
